Typically, it takes around four generations for residents of a particular area to witness the reappearance of a total solar eclipse. However, in certain regions of Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky, residents were treated to this celestial marvel much sooner, experiencing another total solar eclipse in a remarkably short span of just seven years. On Monday, April 8, 2024, sky gazers across North America will be treated to a spectacular celestial event as a total solar eclipse graces the skies. This awe-inspiring phenomenon will journey across the continent, casting its shadow over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Beginning its journey over the vast expanse of the South Pacific Ocean, the eclipse will make its grand entrance over Mexico's Pacific coast, marking the onset of totality around 11:07 a.m. provided the weather cooperates.
The captivating journey of the eclipse commences in Mexico, before making its grand entrance into the United States via Texas. From there, it paints a celestial path across the landscapes of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Enthusiasts in parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also be treated to the awe-inspiring sight of totality.
The journey of the eclipse commences in Mexico before making its way into the United States through Texas. From there, it travels through a breathtaking array of states including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Certain areas of Tennessee and Michigan will also witness the mesmerizing spectacle of a total solar eclipse.
Continuing its celestial voyage, the eclipse enters southern Ontario, Canada, before traversing through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. Finally, as the day draws to a close, the eclipse bids farewell to the North American continent, casting its final shadow over the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, precisely at 5:16 PM NDT.
Total Solar Eclipse?
The phenomenon of the moon obscuring the sun occurs due to the relative "distance" between them. Despite the sun being approximately 400 times larger than the moon, its greater distance from Earth results in both celestial bodies appearing similar in size when viewed from our vantage point. Consequently, as the moon traverses a specific point between the Earth and the sun, it seems to engulf the sun, causing a total solar eclipse.
Moreover, the distance between celestial bodies, with Earth at the center, plays a crucial role in determining the duration of a total solar eclipse. When the moon draws closer to Earth, it appears larger and is capable of blocking out the sun for an extended period. During the upcoming eclipse, the moon is anticipated to approach Earth more closely than during the solar eclipse seven years ago, resulting in a maximum coverage of approximately 70 miles (around 112 km).
